A short run north from Winnipeg — booked by text

Lost your car key in Selkirk — or anywhere in the Interlake?

I'm Leo — a mobile auto locksmith based in Winnipeg. Selkirk is my longest regular run and a close one: about 30 to 40 minutes up Highway 9, so I come to you and cut and program car keys right at your vehicle — a driveway, a parking lot in town, a lakeside spot up at Gimli. No tow into the city, no waiting on a dealer's parts order. Honest version up front — it's a booked trip, often the same day or the next morning, not a ten-minute rescue.

The drive north, honestly

Winnipeg to Selkirk — and how far across the Interlake I'll go.

There's no shop near you; there's a stocked van leaving Winnipeg. Highway 9 runs north past the Perimeter, through Lockport on the Red River, and into Selkirk about half an hour later — then the Interlake opens up toward Gimli and the lake. Here's the run I actually make, and where it shades from easy to plan-ahead.

Winnipeg — the Perimeter

Start · MB

Where the van and the equipment live. Inside the Perimeter the drive is typically free; north of it a travel addition can apply, sized by distance and named in your quote first.

Lockport & St. Andrews

≈20 min · MB

On the Red River, right on the way up Highway 9. A key job at the locks, a boat-launch lot, or a riverside driveway here is about as easy as a town run gets.

Selkirk

≈30–40 min · MB

The main reason I built this page. Lost keys outside the Marine Museum lot, a spare cut in a driveway off Manitoba Avenue, a fob that quit at the mall — Selkirk is the core of what I cover north of the city, and people here already find me.

Stonewall · Gimli · Beausejour

Plan ahead · MB

The wider Interlake — Stonewall northwest on Highway 7, Gimli up the lake, Beausejour east on Highway 44. All real runs, just farther: planned-ahead trips, quoted first. Text the town and I'll tell you straight whether it's worth the wait.

Somewhere else in the Interlake — Teulon, Petersfield, Clandeboye? Text the location anyway. The honest worst case is me telling you it's too far and pointing you somewhere nearer.

Why people text me from up here

The whole job, done in your driveway.

Selkirk and the Interlake have plenty of lock shops that handle houses and businesses — but the chip inside a modern car key is a different job, and the nearest dealer for your make can be a tow and a wait away. The trip that makes sense is the one where I arrive with the cutting and programming kit and you drive away — most often a full set of lost keys rebuilt from scratch.

Everything that travels for a Winnipeg call travels up here too: a spare key cut and programmed before you need it, fob programming for a remote that died, a key cut by decoding the lock when there's no original left, or a plain car lockout when the keys are sitting on the seat. Same skills, same dealer-level access, just a longer driveway to reach.

The boundary that doesn't move with the distance: automotive only. I don't do house doors, cabin locks, padlocks, or safes — not in Winnipeg, not in Selkirk. If the lock isn't on a vehicle, I'll send you to someone who does buildings rather than fake it.

To quote a Selkirk / Interlake trip

  • Year / make / model + what's wrong, by text
  • Where the car sits — town, address, or lot
  • A photo of the VIN and your key, if you still have one
  • Written quote back — the work plus any travel, in one number
  • Photo ID + ownership proof at the car, then I start

Not sure why the VIN helps? Here's what it does and doesn't reveal.

What it costs up here

City prices for the work, honest math for the drive.

The key work itself costs the same as it does in Winnipeg — the pricing-page floors don't change because the car is in Selkirk. The only thing that can be added for a town run is travel — and it's written into the quote before I commit to driving.

The work — same as the city

  • Lost all keys (none start the car)$280+
  • Spare / extra key — transponder$90+
  • Remote head / flip key$160+
  • Proximity smart key$180+
  • Key fob programming$90+
  • Car lockout (keys locked inside)$65

The trip — the only extra

Inside the Perimeter — usually free

Across Winnipeg, the price is the job, not the drive — travel is typically built into the standard price.

Past the Perimeter — a travel addition can apply

Small for Selkirk and Lockport, a bit more for Gimli or Beausejour — sized by distance and where my day already is. It goes into the written quote first, so it's one number that already includes the drive. No meter running, no surprise line on arrival.

Plus applicable tax

Tax is added to the total and itemized on your receipt. No vague "service fees."

The number you agree to by text is the number you pay. If you'd rather not send the VIN before booking, that's fine — the quote just comes back as a small range until I see the car.

Check me before you text

A registered business — not a van and a guess.

Anyone can buy a key cutter and drive up the highway. So before you let someone near your car, it's worth knowing who they are. I make that easy: I'm a Winnipeg-registered business, and the record is public — look it up before you ever message me.

Beyond the paperwork, the things that actually protect you: commercial general liability insurance, NASTF VSP authorization for secure access to manufacturer key and immobilizer data, and a firm rule that I check photo ID against proof of ownership before I cut a single key. More about who I am, and how to spot a locksmith you shouldn't trust.

Selkirk & Interlake questions, answered straight.

The out-of-town ones I actually get. General service questions live on the full FAQ page.

Do you actually drive up to Selkirk?

Yes. Selkirk is my longest regular run, but it's a close one — roughly a 30-to-40-minute drive north on Highway 9. Text me the vehicle, what's wrong, and where it sits, and because it's close it's often the same day or the next morning. It's still a booked trip rather than a drop-everything call-out: anyone promising to be at your car in Selkirk in ten minutes from Winnipeg isn't telling you the truth about the distance.

I lost my only key in Selkirk or out at Gimli — can you still make one?

Yes, that's the core of what I do. With no key to copy, I decode the locks at the vehicle, cut a fresh key to that code, and program it to your car through dealer-level access — the same information a dealership would use — so the car starts and locks again. It happens right where the car is parked: a driveway, a lakeside lot in Gimli, a parking stall in town. I need government photo ID and proof you own the vehicle before I cut anything.

How much does it cost compared to Winnipeg, and is there a travel charge?

The work itself is priced the same as it is in the city — the floors on my pricing page hold whether the car is in Winnipeg or Selkirk. Inside the Perimeter travel is typically free; past it a travel addition can apply — small for Selkirk and Lockport, a bit more for Gimli or Beausejour — and it goes into the written quote before I drive anywhere. One number that already includes the trip, so there's no meter running and no surprise line when I arrive.

Do you cover the whole Interlake — Stonewall, Gimli, Beausejour?

Case-by-case, around where my day already sits. Selkirk and Lockport are the easy ones — practically a straight run up Highway 9. Stonewall, Gimli and Beausejour are planned-ahead trips, so text early and I'll tell you straight whether today works or tomorrow morning is realistic. When it's a go, the drive is already in the written number.

Are you a real registered business, or just driving up from the city?

Registered, and you can check before you ever text me. RAXO Locksmiths is a trade name of RAXO Group Inc., a Winnipeg corporation — Corp #10249209, Manitoba Business Name Registry #10259548, both public records. On top of the paperwork: NASTF VSP authorization for secure access to manufacturer key and immobilizer data, commercial general liability insurance, and a firm rule that I check photo ID against proof of ownership before I cut a single key. Those are the things that actually protect you.

Do you do house lockouts, cabins, or padlocks in Selkirk?

No — automotive only, everywhere I go. No house or cabin doors, no padlocks, no boathouse locks, no safes, in Winnipeg or out in the Interlake. It's the same boundary I keep in the city: if it isn't a car key or a car lockout, it's not my call, and I'll point you to someone who handles building locks rather than pretend it is.
