Spare from $90+
I'm Leo. I make and program Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis keys at your vehicle — Elantra, Sonata, Tucson, Santa Fe, Kona, Palisade, Forte, K5, Sportage, Sorento, Soul, Telluride, Carnival. If your Hyundai or Kia was bought new in Canada it already has an immobilizer, which means the key has to be programmed to the car — not just cut. I carry the blanks and the dealer-level access to do both on-site, so a stuck Hyundai or Kia owner doesn't have to flatbed it to a dealer and wait.

Why Hyundai & Kia are their own thing
You've probably seen the viral US theft videos — Hyundais and Kias getting stolen in seconds with nothing but a USB cable. Here's what almost nobody explains: those were US-market base models from roughly 2011–2021 that shipped without an engine immobilizer. Canada has required an immobilizer on every new vehicle sold here since 2007 — so a Hyundai or Kia you bought new in Winnipeg almost certainly has one already. That's good news for security, and it's exactly why your replacement key has to be programmed to the car, not just cut at a kiosk.
From the mid-2000s, most Hyundai and Kia keys are a metal blade with an encrypted chip in the head. The car won't start unless it sees the right chip — so a plain copy cut from your spare won't crank the engine. I cut the blade and program the chip on-site. Plenty of these are flip or remote-head style — the blade folds out of a body with lock/unlock buttons — which is the $160+ tier.
Spare from $90+
From around 2015 the popular models — Tucson, Santa Fe, Sonata, Sportage, Sorento, Palisade, Telluride — moved to a proximity Smart Key with push-button start, first on the top trims, then across the board. These cost more to replace because the fob hardware costs more.
Spare from $180+
After the US theft wave, Hyundai and Kia made the immobilizer standard in every market from the 2022 model year — even the basic US turn-key trims that used to skip it. Canadian-market cars already had one (required here since 2007), so every current Hyundai/Kia needs a programmed key, full stop. The newest platforms add tighter security; I'll confirm scope by year and trim.
Driving a used model imported from the States? That's the one case where yours might not have an immobilizer. If so, the key is actually simpler to replace — but you should know what you've got, and you may want to ask MPI about the extra theft risk. Text me the year and I'll tell you exactly what your car takes.
The Hyundai side
Every modern Hyundai in scope — transponder or Smart Key. Year and trim decide which key you've got, so text me both (or a photo of your existing key) for an exact quote.
Sedan · 2007+
One of the most common Hyundais in Winnipeg. Older generations are transponder turn-key; newer ones (and Elantra N / Hybrid) run proximity Smart Key. The trim decides the tier.
SUV · 2007+
High-volume SUV. The 2022+ redesign runs a proximity Smart Key on most trims, Hybrid and PHEV included — base trims can differ, so confirm by trim. Earlier generations split transponder vs. Smart Key by trim.
SUV · 2007+
Family-SUV volume job. Smart Key on upper trims for years, standard on the latest generation. Same key family as the related Santa Cruz pickup.
Sedan · 2007+
Transponder through the early 2010s, then Smart Key on higher trims. Hybrid and N-Line use the same key as the gas trim of that year.
Crossover · 2018+ / 2020+
Mostly Smart Key, some base trims transponder. Kona Electric uses the same key family as the gas Kona. Venue is the entry crossover — text the trim.
2020+ / Ioniq 5 & 6
Palisade is proximity Smart Key across the range. Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 EVs are Smart Key too. Newest platforms — text me the year so I can confirm scope before I dispatch.
Not listed? Accent, Veloster, Ioniq hybrid, Santa Cruz, older Santa Fe Sport / XL — still in scope. Text the year and model.
The Kia side
Kia shares its key and immobilizer engineering with Hyundai, so the same rule applies: bought new in Canada means it's chipped, and the year and trim decide transponder vs. Smart Key.
Sedan · 2010+
Kia's compact-sedan volume model. Older Forte / Forte5 are transponder turn-key at the floor; GT and recent trims move to Smart Key. Common spare-key and AKL job.
SUV · 2007+
Kia's Tucson twin. The 2023+ redesign runs a Smart Key on most trims, Hybrid and PHEV included — base trims can differ. Earlier ones split by trim — verify by trim or photo.
SUV · 2007+
Mid-size three-row. Smart Key on upper trims for years, standard on the current generation. Sorento Hybrid and PHEV use the same key as the gas trim.
Sedan · 2011+
Optima through 2020, renamed K5 from 2021. Smart Key on higher trims early, standard on the K5. GT and AWD trims share the base key family of that year.
2010+ / 2021+
Soul is a transponder-and-Smart-Key split by trim and year; Soul EV uses the same family as the gas Soul. Seltos (2021+) is mostly Smart Key. Text the trim.
2020+ / 2022+
Telluride (the big three-row), Carnival minivan, and the EV6 are all proximity Smart Key across the range. Newest platforms — text me the year to confirm scope first.
G70, G80, G90, GV60, GV70, and GV80 run the same immobilizer and Smart Key families as the Hyundai side, generation for generation — almost all proximity Smart Key, so they sit in the higher tier. In scope; text me the model and year and I'll confirm the exact key and quote before I dispatch.
Smart Key tier
Not on the list? Rio, Niro, Stinger (discontinued), Rondo, Sedona — older or lower-volume, still in scope. Text the year and model and I'll confirm.
Hyundai + Kia pricing
Open-ended starting prices. Older transponder turn-key models sit at the floor; proximity Smart Key models sit higher because the fob hardware costs more. Written quote by text before I dispatch.
Spare / extra key
$90+ transponder
$160+ remote head / flip
$180+ smart key
Cut and programmed at your vehicle. All Hyundai, Kia + Genesis models. Transponder trims at the floor; Smart Key trims sit higher in the range. Full breakdown on the spare key page.
Lost all keys (AKL)
$280+
A brand-new Hyundai or Kia key programmed straight into the immobilizer at your vehicle, once ownership is confirmed. The dealer would order the key, usually tow the car in, and wait for a bay — this is one trip. Details on the lost-keys page.
Fob programming only
$90+ you bring it
$90+ I supply
Bring a reputable aftermarket Hyundai/Kia fob and the programming is labour-only at $90+; or I supply a basic remote — same $90+ floor. A push-button-start proximity Smart Key is a pricier part — that's the spare / AKL pricing above, not a $90 basic-fob job. Fob programming details →
Manitoba PST 7% + GST 5% = 12% added to the total. Distance fees case-by-case (typically free inside the Perimeter). Payment by e-transfer, tap, or cash — after the key works. Full pricing transparency including supply-your-own-fob policy on the pricing page. Other brand pages: Toyota · Honda / Acura · Jeep / Ram. Full vehicle list on vehicles I service.
From a Winnipeg Kia job — two flip keys cut and programmed at the car. More going up as I shoot them.

If it was bought new in Canada, almost certainly yes. Canada has required an electronic immobilizer on every new vehicle sold here since 2007 — so your key has an encrypted chip (or it's a proximity Smart Key) that has to be programmed to the car, not just cut. That's the part most hardware-store key-cutters can't do. I cut and program both at your vehicle. The exception is a used Hyundai or Kia imported from the United States, where some 2011–2021 base models shipped without an immobilizer — text me the year and I'll tell you which kind of key yours takes.
Spare or extra key starts at $90+ for a plain transponder key, $160+ for a flip or remote-head key (the blade with lock/unlock buttons — common on mid-trim Hyundais and Kias), and $180+ for a proximity Smart Key, if I supply. Less if you bring your own reputable aftermarket fob. Lost all keys (AKL) starts at $280+. Fob programming on its own starts at $90+. Older turn-key transponder models (Accent, older Forte, Rio) sit at the floor; push-button Smart Key models (Palisade, Telluride, newer Tucson and Sportage) sit higher because the fob hardware costs more. Written quote by text before I dispatch — the number I send is the number you pay.
Yes. I have dealer-level access — information, hardware, and software — for most Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis platforms across the transponder and Smart Key lineup. Proximity Smart Key all-keys-lost takes a bit longer than an older transponder job because of the fob hardware, but it's still a one-trip job at your vehicle — no tow, no dealer queue. The newest 2023+ models with the latest security tighten things up; text me the exact year, model, and trim first and I'll confirm scope before I dispatch.
That was mostly a United States problem. The cars in those viral theft videos were US-market base models from roughly 2011–2021 that shipped without an engine immobilizer. Canada has required immobilizers on new vehicles since 2007, so a Hyundai or Kia bought new here almost always already has one — which is exactly why it can't be hot-wired the way those US cars were. If you're driving a used model imported from the States, text me the year and VIN area and I'll tell you what you've actually got and what your best key and security options are.
Yes. Genesis is Hyundai's luxury line (G70, G80, G90, GV60, GV70, GV80) and runs the same immobilizer and Smart Key families as the Hyundai side, generation for generation. Most Genesis models are proximity Smart Key, so they sit in the higher pricing tier. Text me the model and year and I'll confirm the exact key and quote before I dispatch.
Almost always the battery. Most Hyundai and Kia fobs — Smart Key or flip remote — take a CR2032 coin cell, though some newer Hyundais (Kona, Palisade, recent Elantras) use the bigger CR2450; the code is printed right on the battery inside the fob. Swap it and you're usually back. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, then it's a programming or hardware issue and I can sort it on-site. The mechanical blade hidden inside the Smart Key still unlocks the driver's door by hand if you're ever locked out. Full walkthrough on the fob programming page.
Yes — that's the all-keys-lost (AKL) job. Because every Hyundai and Kia sold in Canada has carried a factory immobilizer from 2007 onward, a lost-all-keys always means programming a brand-new key to the car, not just cutting one. Using dealer-level access — the same information the dealership works from — I cut a fresh blade and program a new transponder or Smart Key into your Hyundai or Kia immobilizer on-site in Winnipeg, no dealer tow. Before I start I verify ownership — photo ID matched to your registration or proof of insurance in your name — and if the documents are locked inside, I run the lockout first so you can reach them.
Year / model / trim tells me transponder vs. Smart Key. Or just send a photo of the existing key and I'll figure it out from there.
Quote in writing before I dispatch. Elantra, Tucson, Sonata, Forte, Sportage, Sorento, Telluride, Genesis — transponder or Smart Key, cut and programmed on-site. Pay after the key starts the engine.
