Every Toyota chip from 4C to 8A Smart Key

Toyota key replacement in Winnipeg, from 4C transponders to 8A Smart Keys.

I'm Leo. I cut and program Toyota keys at your vehicle — Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Highlander, Tacoma, Tundra, Sienna, 4Runner, Prius. Most immobilizer generations Toyota has shipped in North America are in scope. Pricing depends on key type and job complexity — written quote first, no surprises on arrival. I have dealer-level access for most Toyota platforms, including the famous 16-minute reset that stops a lot of locksmiths in their tracks. If you've already been turned away by another shop, that's exactly the call I'm built to take.

25+ years of Toyota immobilizer tech

Five chip generations, one shop in Winnipeg that does all of them.

Toyota's immobilizer hardware has stepped forward four times since the late 1990s. Each step closed off the cheap-and-fast key-cloning tools that worked on the previous generation, and the dealer's pricing went up to match. Knowing which generation your Toyota uses tells you what blank fits, what programming flow applies, and how long the job actually takes.

Gen 1

4C

1998 – 2002

First-generation Toyota transponder. Fixed-code chip — the key sends the same ID every time the ignition turns. Common on older Camry XV20 / XV30, Corolla E110 / E120, RAV4 XA10 / XA20, 4Runner 3rd gen, Tacoma 1st gen. Spare keys and AKL on 4C platforms are typically the cheapest and fastest jobs in my Toyota bracket — the cryptography is simple enough that modern tools handle them in minutes.

Gen 2

4D-67

2003 – 2005

Rolling-code transponder. Same physical key form factor as 4C but the chip rotates its response on every ignition cycle — a meaningful security upgrade. Camry XV30 late-build, early XV40, Corolla E120 / E130, RAV4 XA20, Highlander 1st gen, Sienna XL20 sit on this generation. Standard transponder programming, no Smart Key wireless layer yet.

Gen 3

G-chip

2005 – 2010 · 80-bit encryption

Toyota's first encrypted transponder generation — 80-bit cryptography. This is the generation where the cheap cloners stopped working. Camry XV40, Corolla E140 / E150, RAV4 XA30, Highlander XU20 / XU40 early, Tacoma 2nd gen, Tundra 2nd gen, Sienna XL20 / XL30 sit here. Smart Key proximity became an option on premium trims in this era — Avalon, Highlander Limited, Prius Touring — but most G-chip Toyotas were still traditional blade-and-turn keys. In scope at the floor — I have dealer-level access for this generation across Camry, Corolla, RAV4, and the rest of the mainstream line.

Gen 4

H-chip

2010 – 2018 · AES 128-bit

AES-128-bit encrypted transponder — the longest-running modern Toyota platform. Camry XV50 / XV70 early, Corolla E170 / E180, RAV4 XA40 / XA50 early, Highlander XU50, Tacoma 3rd gen, Tundra 2nd gen late, Sienna XL30, 4Runner 5th gen, Prius XW30 / XW50. Smart Key proximity rolled out to the mainstream lines in this window — Camry from 2015, RAV4 from 2016, Corolla from 2017. H-chip is harder to clone than G-chip — so the aftermarket standard moved from cloning to generating a fresh key paired with the vehicle's immobilizer. Generating a fresh H-chip key is exactly the dealer-level capability a lot of aftermarket shops don't have. I do.

Gen 5

8A / 8A-BA

2019 + · Smart Key proximity

Current-generation Smart Key proximity. Camry XV70 late-build, Corolla E210 facelift, RAV4 XA50, Highlander XU70, Tacoma 3rd gen late + 4th gen, Sienna XL40 (hybrid-only), 4Runner 5th gen late + 6th gen, Prius XW60. The 2022+ Tundra XK70, 2024+ Land Cruiser J300, and 2024+ Tacoma 4th gen use the newer 8A-BA variant plus an additional security layer that locks down the programming network — same architectural concept as Stellantis SGW. Text me your year/model/trim before dispatch for anything in that 2022+ window so I can confirm scope.

Toyota AKL · the legendary wait

The 16-minute Toyota reset — and why it isn't a wall here.

If you've Googled "Toyota all keys lost" or read a thread on a Tacoma forum, you've seen the number: 16 minutes. That's the mandatory wait baked into Toyota's traditional all-keys-lost flow — a security delay between unlocking the immobilizer and being allowed to write a fresh key. It exists for a good reason (it slows down stolen-vehicle attacks) but for the actual owner standing in a parking lot, it's an obnoxious chunk of time.

The dealer route still runs the traditional flow. I have dealer-level access for most Toyota platforms — G-chip, H-chip, and 8A. That capability skips the legacy wait on most jobs, meaningfully faster than the traditional flow. It's the capability gap most aftermarket locksmiths haven't closed — and the main reason a stuck Toyota owner who's been turned away once usually ends up texting me next.

2022+ 8A-BA platforms with the additional security gateway take longer because that extra step adds time. I'll quote honestly before I dispatch.

If your Toyota is stuck with no working key

Three routes — pick the one that matches your day

Tow + dealer

$1,050+

Tow truck to a Toyota service centre ($100–$250). Dealer parts order — 3 to 10 business days without your vehicle. Service-bay slot, traditional 16-minute reset, OEM-only key. Worst-case total when you're stranded.

Aftermarket locksmith that can't do Toyota

$0 — turned away

Most Winnipeg locksmiths bounce on Toyota AKL because the legacy 16-minute reset plus G / H / 8A chip diversity needs dealer-level access most shops haven't paid for. You spend the morning finding a "yes" and the afternoon hearing "no, sorry." Then you're back at route 1.

RAXO

From $280+ AKL

I drive to wherever your Toyota is. Ownership verification, then cut and program on-site. Dealer-level access covers most G / H / 8A platforms — meaningfully faster than the traditional flow. Written quote first; final number depends on key type and complexity. No tow, no wait list, no service-bay shuffle.

2022+ 8A-BA platforms with the additional security gateway sit at the higher end of my AKL range because that extra step adds time. I'll always say so in the written quote before I dispatch.

By model

What I do for the Toyotas Winnipeggers actually drive.

The most common Toyota models on Winnipeg streets, ranked by the volume I see. Smart Key intro years are typical for mainstream trims — premium trims (Limited, Platinum) often got Smart Key a generation earlier. Text me the year and trim for confirmation.

Toyota pricing

What a Toyota key actually costs.

Open-ended starting prices. Older transponder generations (4C, 4D-67) sit at the floor; H-chip and 8A Smart Keys sit higher in the range because the blanks and programming time cost more. Written quote by text before I dispatch — and the number I send is the number you pay.

Spare / extra key

Spare Toyota key or Smart Key

$90+ transponder

$160+ remote head / flip

$180+ smart key

Cut and programmed at your vehicle. Most Toyota models, every chip family. 4C and 4D-67 transponders typically at the floor; H-chip and 8A Smart Keys sit higher because the fob hardware costs more. Full breakdown on the spare key page.

Lost all keys (AKL)

All-keys-lost replacement

$280+

A brand-new Toyota key, cut and programmed at your vehicle through dealer-level access once I have confirmed ownership. Where the dealer runs the traditional 16-minute reset after a tow and a parts-order wait, I go straight to programming on-site. Details on the lost-keys page.

Fob programming only

BYO fob or supply + program

$90+ you bring it

$90+ I supply

Bring a reputable aftermarket Toyota fob and the programming is labour-only at $90+; or I supply a basic remote — same $90+ floor. A push-button-start proximity Smart Key is a pricier part — that's the spare / AKL pricing above, not a $90 basic-fob job. Fob programming details →

What chip is in my Toyota key?

Toyota has used five immobilizer generations since the late 1990s. 1998–2002: 4C fixed-code. 2003–2005: 4D-67 rolling code. 2005–2010: G-chip (80-bit encryption). 2010–2018: H-chip (AES 128-bit encryption). 2019+: 8A Smart Key (AES proximity). Your year and model tell me which chip you have — text me both and I'll confirm the exact spec before I dispatch.

Can you do a Toyota all-keys-lost without the 16-minute wait?

Yes — and that's the main reason a stuck Toyota owner who's already been turned away once usually ends up at me. The 16-minute reset is Toyota's traditional all-keys-lost flow that the dealer still runs. I have dealer-level access — information, hardware, and software — for most Toyota platforms (G-chip, H-chip, and 8A), which lets me skip the wait entirely on most jobs. A Toyota AKL that used to take 45+ minutes lands in the 25–35 minute range here. Newer 2022+ 8A-BA platforms with the additional security gateway take longer because of that extra step.

Can you do a 2022 or newer Toyota Tundra, Land Cruiser, or Tacoma key?

Case-by-case. The 2022+ Tundra (XK70), 2024+ Land Cruiser J300, and 2024+ Tacoma 4th gen use the newer 8A-BA / 4A Smart Key protocol plus an additional security layer that blocks unauthorized programming. Text me your exact year/model/trim before I dispatch — I'll confirm whether your specific platform is currently in scope or whether the dealer is still the better route.

How much does a Toyota key replacement cost in Winnipeg?

Spare or extra key starts at $90+ for older transponder keys (4C / 4D-67) and $180+ for newer 8A Smart Keys with proximity if I supply. Less if you bring your own reputable aftermarket fob. Lost all keys (AKL) starts at $280+. Fob programming on its own starts at $90+. H-chip transponders sit in the middle of the range. Written quote by text before I dispatch — the number I send is the number you pay.

Do you do hybrids? Prius, RAV4 Hybrid, Camry Hybrid?

Yes. The hybrid powertrain doesn't change the key or immobilizer architecture on any Toyota I service — the Prius, RAV4 Hybrid, Camry Hybrid, Highlander Hybrid, Sienna (hybrid-only since 2021), and Corolla Hybrid all use the same chip family as their gas siblings for that model year. Same programming flow, same blanks, same price tier.

What's the difference between a transponder key and a Smart Key on a Toyota?

A transponder key is a metal blade with a chip in the head — you insert it in the ignition and turn. Toyota used these from 1998 through the late 2010s on base trims. A Smart Key (proximity fob) talks wirelessly to the car so you can unlock and push-button-start without taking it out of your pocket. Toyota offered Smart Key from the mid-2000s on premium trims (Avalon, Highlander Limited, Prius Touring) and rolled it to mainstream lines through 2015–2017 — Camry 2015+, RAV4 2016+, Corolla 2017+. Both are in scope at the standard price floors.

Can you cut a Toyota key from the VIN if I have no key at all?

Yes — losing every Toyota key is the classic all-keys-lost (AKL) job, and it's the most common reason a Winnipeg Toyota owner texts me after a dealer quoted a tow plus a wait. Using dealer-level access — the same information the dealership works from — I cut a fresh blade and program a brand-new transponder or 8A Smart Key straight into your Toyota's immobilizer on-site, with no 16-minute dealer reset and no flatbed. Before I start I verify ownership — photo ID matched to your registration or proof of insurance in your name — and if the documents are locked inside, I run the lockout first so you can pull them.

My Toyota key fob stopped working — is it the battery or the immobilizer?

Almost always the battery. The mechanical blade still cranks the lock even on a Smart Key fob with a dead battery — pop the concealed mechanical blade out of the fob and unlock the door manually. To start a Smart Key Toyota with a dead fob battery, hold the fob's Toyota logo against the start button while pressing the brake — most Smart Key Toyotas have an inductive backup for exactly this case. If a fresh CR2032 doesn't fix it, then it's a programming or hardware issue and I can sort it on-site. Full walkthrough on the fob programming page.
