Jeep key replacement in Winnipeg — Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, and the newer 2018+ models.

By Leo — mobile auto locksmith, Winnipeg · Updated July 2026

At RAXO Locksmiths in Winnipeg, I cut and program Jeep keys at your vehicle — spare keys from $90+, Smart Keys from $180+. All-keys-lost starts at $280+ plus tax for most transponder and remote-head keys, or $350+ for a push-to-start smart key. A second key made the same visit is half price, so two keys run $420+ (transponder) or $500+ (smart). Written quote by text before I drive out.

Every Jeep — Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Gladiator, Compass, Renegade, and Wagoneer. The extra factory security on the newer 2018+ models that turns away most aftermarket locksmiths isn't a barrier here — I have dealer-level access and the common blanks on hand (rarer ones I order in). Key type by era

Which Jeep key do I need for my year?

Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Chrysler keys (now also Pacifica and Voyager) have moved through a few eras since the late 1990s — from a simple transponder key, to a remote-equipped key, to an integrated key fob, to today's push-button proximity Smart Key. Knowing roughly which era your vehicle falls in tells you what blank fits and what it'll cost: older = simpler and cheaper, newer (2018+) = needs the dealer-level access most locksmiths don't have.

Gen 1 · 1998–2004

Transponder key

Older transponder system

First-generation transponder key. Older Caravans, Wranglers (TJ), Cherokees (XJ/WJ), Ram trucks of this era. Mechanical metal blade with a chip in the head — the simplest and cheapest tier to replace.

Gen 2 · 2005–2009

Remote-equipped key

Transponder key + remote

Added remote keyless entry (lock/unlock buttons) to the transponder key. Most mid-2000s Chrysler 300, Charger, Magnum, Grand Cherokee WK, Wrangler JK. Still an older, lower-cost tier to replace.

Gen 3 · 2010–2013

Newer-electronics key

Updated in-vehicle electronics

Keys moved onto the newer in-vehicle electronics of this era. Late JK Wranglers, Grand Cherokee WK2, early Ram 1500 4th gen, Charger LD all fall here. Straightforward for me to program on-site.

Gen 4 · 2010+

Integrated key fob

Blade + remote + chip in one

Combined blade, remote, and transponder in a single key fob. Standard on most Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Chrysler vehicles from 2010 onward where push-button start isn't fitted. Programmable on-site.

Gen 5 · 2018+

Proximity Smart Key

Smart Key + extra factory security

Push-button-start proximity fob, plus the newer factory anti-theft security that locks down the programming network. Wrangler JL, Gladiator JT, Ram 1500 5th gen, Pacifica, Wagoneer. Most aftermarket locksmiths can't do these — they don't have the dealer-level access. I do.

2018+ models · critical detail

The 2018+ problem — and why most locksmiths turn down newer Jeep / Ram jobs.

If your Jeep, Ram, Dodge or Chrysler is 2018 or newer, it has extra factory anti-theft security that locks down the vehicle's programming network. By default that interface is read-only — an ordinary tool can read diagnostic data, but it can't write the new key into the immobilizer.

The manufacturer built it that way on purpose — to make these vehicles harder to steal. The side effect: independent locksmiths who don't have the proper dealer-level access are simply blocked from programming a new key on any 2018+ Jeep / Ram / Dodge / Chrysler. They'll diagnose, quote, drive over, and discover they can't do the work.

What I carry

Dealer-level access for the newer 2018+ models

  • Dealer-level write access on the locked-down newer models
  • Dealer-level access kept current through the latest model years — covers Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Chrysler
  • Integrated key fobs and proximity blank fobs on hand for the common models
  • Dealer-level access for ownership-verified key generation

A sign you're dealing with this: you called another locksmith, they came to your Jeep / Ram / Pacifica, plugged in, and said "I can read it but I can't program it." That's the lockdown — not the locksmith. Text me the year/model and I'll tell you straight whether your vehicle has the extra security and what it'll take.

JEEP

Brand 1 of 4

Jeep

The most common of these four brands I service in Winnipeg. Wrangler especially — I stock the common JK and JL blanks; rarer years I order in.

Starting prices follow the standard floor — spare from $90+ (transponder) or $180+ (Smart Key / integrated key fob), all-keys-lost from $280+ (transponder/remote-head) or $350+ (JL/Gladiator proximity Smart Key), fob programming from $90+.

Wrangler (JK / JL / 4xe)

2007–2017 JK · 2018+ JL · 4xe PHEV

JK Wrangler (2007–2017) uses an older key family — straightforward to program with no extra-security hurdle. JL Wrangler (2018+) and Wrangler 4xe (PHEV from 2021) use a proximity Smart Key with the newer factory security. The 4xe key is identical to the gas JL — the hybrid powertrain doesn't change the immobilizer setup.

Grand Cherokee (WK2 / WL / 4xe)

2011–2021 WK2 · 2022+ WL · 4xe PHEV

WK2 (2011–2021) uses an integrated proximity key fob on nearly every trim — a few 2012–2013 base units got the slot-in fob instead. WL (2022+) and Grand Cherokee L are the newer models with the extra factory security. WK2 SRT and Trackhawk use the same key family as the regular trims — no special variant.

Cherokee (KL)

2014–2023

KL Cherokee (different platform from the older XJ/KJ/KK) uses an integrated key fob. Trailhawk variants identical to regular trims for key purposes. Discontinued in 2023 — keys still well-supported.

Gladiator, Compass, Renegade, Wagoneer

2020+ Gladiator · others vary

Gladiator JT (2020+) shares the JL Wrangler key family and the newer factory security. Compass and Renegade use lighter Italian-platform fobs but program the same way. Wagoneer / Grand Wagoneer (2022+) — newest, with the extra factory security, full proximity Smart Key.

How much does a Jeep key cost in Winnipeg?

At RAXO Locksmiths in Winnipeg, I cut and program Jeep car keys on-site — spare keys from $90+, Smart Keys from $180+. All-keys-lost starts at $280+ plus tax for most transponder and remote-head keys, or $350+ for a push-to-start smart key. A second key made the same visit is half price, so two keys run $420+ (transponder) or $500+ (smart).

Open-ended starting prices. Final number depends on your year/model (older platforms cheaper, newer 2018+ platforms higher because of the extra dealer-level access step). Written quote before I dispatch.

Spare / extra key

Spare Jeep key or fob

$90+ transponder

$160+ remote head / flip

$180+ smart key

Cut and programmed at your vehicle. Every Jeep — Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Gladiator. Pre-2018 platforms run at the floor; JL Wrangler and Gladiator with the newer factory security sit higher due to the extra dealer-level access step. See spare key page for the full breakdown.

Lost all keys (AKL)

All-keys-lost replacement

$280+

All-keys-lost starts at $280+ plus tax for most transponder and remote-head keys, or $350+ for a push-to-start smart key. A second key made the same visit is half price, so two keys run $420+ (transponder) or $500+ (smart).

New key generated from scratch at your vehicle with ownership verification (photo ID matched to registration or proof of insurance in your name). Compare to forum-reported dealer pricing of $250–$500+ plus $100–$250 tow. See lost-keys page.

Fob programming only

BYO fob or supply + program

$90+ you bring it

$90+ I supply

Bring a reputable aftermarket key fob (e.g. Hopkins, Strattec) and the programming is labour-only at $90+; or I supply a basic remote — same $90+ floor. A push-button-start proximity key fob is a pricier part — that's the spare / AKL pricing above, not a $90 basic-fob job. Fob programming details →

How a spare, an AKL, and a fob-only visit differ is laid out on my replacement service overview.

Most jobs add 12% tax (7% Manitoba PST + 5% GST); labour-only work — like a car lockout or programming a fob you already own — is 5% GST only. Free inside the Perimeter; $1.20 per km beyond, up to roughly 150 km. Payment by e-transfer, tap, or cash — after the key works. Full pricing breakdown including supply-your-own-fob policy on the pricing page.

Jeep key questions, answered.

Service-specific questions live on the dedicated spare, lost-keys, and fob pages. More on the full FAQ page.

Do you program 2018+ Jeep Wrangler JL keys on-site?

Yes. The 2018+ Wrangler JL uses a push-button-start proximity key fob. From mid-2018 onward, these models added extra factory anti-theft security that locks down the programming network unless you have dealer-level access — which is why most locksmiths turn them away. I have the dealer-level access and the common blanks on hand (rarer ones I order in). JL Rubicon, Sahara, Sport, and 4xe PHEV all program the same way.

What's the difference between an integrated key fob, a Smart Key, and "proximity" on a Jeep / Ram / Dodge / Chrysler?

An integrated key fob is a single device that holds the metal blade, transponder chip, and remote buttons. A Smart Key / proximity key is the next generation — the fob talks wirelessly to the car so you can unlock and start without taking it out of your pocket. Most 2010+ Jeep / Ram / Dodge / Chrysler vehicles run one of these two systems. Functionally similar from a programming standpoint, slightly different hardware.

How much does a Jeep Wrangler key replacement cost in Winnipeg?

Spare key for a Wrangler starts at $90+ for older JK transponder keys, $160+ for integrated key fobs, and $180+ for JL proximity Smart Keys if I supply. Less if you bring your own reputable aftermarket fob. All-keys-lost starts at $280+ plus tax for most transponder and remote-head keys, or $350+ for a push-to-start smart key. A second key made the same visit is half price, so two keys run $420+ (transponder) or $500+ (smart). The written quote I text you before dispatch is the exact number.

Do you do the Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid keys?

Yes. The Wrangler 4xe (and the Grand Cherokee 4xe and Pacifica Hybrid) uses the same proximity key fob as the gas variant — the hybrid powertrain doesn't change the key/immobilizer setup. Same programming flow, same blanks, same price tier.

How long does a Jeep key replacement take in Winnipeg?

A spare cut from an existing key: 5–10 minutes. A transponder, flip or Smart Key spare: 30–40 minutes at your vehicle. All keys lost: plan 1–3 hours — the decode and ownership checks add time. You get the exact timing with the written quote.
