TL;DR · which Ram job is it?

Classic or new generation.

Pre-tax, mobile, at the car: key work adds 12% tax, a lockout 5% GST. "+" means "starts at" — the exact number comes by text first.

No working key left

All keys lost (AKL)

Slot-in FOBIK, 2019 and older$280+
2020 and newer, or push-to-start$350+

Every copy is gone, so a new key gets made from scratch and matched to the vehicle. Ownership verification required — photo ID matched to registration or insurance.

One key still works

Spare key or fob

Spare FOBIK, fob supplied$220+
Programming a fob you bring$90+

While one key still works, the job costs far less. Book the spare before the last key goes missing.

A real Ram job: a spare fob for a 2022 Ram 1500 Classic.

The owner of a 2022 Ram 1500 Classic had one working fob and wanted a spare. The Classic is the 2009–2018 truck that Ram kept building after the new generation arrived, so it takes that truck's fob, not the newer one. I programmed the new fob at the truck and tested it before I left.

The photo below is from that job.

Which key does your Ram 1500 take? Three generations.

Ram has used three kinds of key on the 1500 from 2002 to today, and the generation decides the job:

  • →2002–2008 — a metal key with a chip in the head that you turn. If the truck has a remote, it is a separate fob. Spares start at $90+.
  • →2009–2018, plus the Ram 1500 Classic — the FOBIK. Most trucks slide it into a slot in the dash and turn it; trims with push-button start use a proximity version of the fob that stays in your pocket. A spare is $220+ with the fob supplied, or $90+ to program a fob you bring. All-keys-lost is $280+ on a 2019-or-older truck with the slot-in fob, and $350+ on a 2020-or-newer Classic or a push-to-start truck. These trucks have none of the newer factory security, which keeps the job straightforward.
  • →2019 on, the new generation — a push-button proximity fob (not the FOBIK) with newer factory security that locks down programming. Spare and all-keys-lost keys for these trucks take dealer-level access and more time to program safely and properly, so they cost more than the starting price. The written quote has the exact number.

Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks take the same keys as the 1500 of the same generation. If your truck is a Classic, say so in your text, because it changes the quote.

How the job goes.

1

Text the year + where the vehicle sits

Add the trim, or a photo of a key you still have. That tells me which key your vehicle takes before I quote.

2

One written number back

The quote lands in the text thread before I move — travel included, nothing added at the car.

3

The key gets made at the car

Driveway, parkade, or a mall lot — I decode, cut, and program on-site. A spare takes well under an hour; plan 1–3 hours for all-keys-lost. Ownership check comes first.

4

You test it before I leave

You test the start, the locks, and the remote. Parts I supply carry a 12-month warranty.

Bought a Ram fob yourself? Send me the part number.

A fob you supply has to match your truck's generation and its options, remote start and the tailgate button included. Send me a photo of the part number before I come; when it is the right part, programming it at your truck starts at $90+ plus tax. When I supply the fob, the spare starts at $220+. A second fob made the same visit costs less than coming back for it later; that number goes in the written quote.

Common questions about Ram 1500 keys.

How much is a Ram 1500 key fob in Winnipeg?

For a 2009–2018 Ram 1500 or a Ram 1500 Classic, a spare FOBIK starts at $220+ plus tax when I supply the fob, or $90+ to program a fob you bring. All-keys-lost starts at $280+ on a 2019-or-older truck with the slot-in fob, or $350+ on a 2020-or-newer Classic or a push-to-start truck. A new-generation Ram 1500 (2019 on) costs more than the starting price because of its newer factory security, and your written quote has the exact number.

Is a Ram 1500 Classic key the same as a new Ram 1500 key?

No. The Classic is the 2009–2018 truck that Ram kept selling after the new generation arrived in 2019, and it keeps that truck's FOBIK. The new-generation Ram 1500 uses a push-button proximity fob with newer factory security. The same name on the tailgate covers two different keys at two different prices.

Another locksmith could read my 2019 Ram but not add a key. Can you?

Yes. The 2019-and-newer Ram 1500 locks its programming down by default, so adding a key is a much bigger job than reading the truck, and many shops stop at the reading. I finish the job at your truck, and the written quote comes first.

Do I need a new fob if the buttons stopped working?

Not if it is the battery. The coin cell powers the remote buttons, so weak or dead buttons point to the battery first; swap it before you book anything. If a fresh battery changes nothing, I program a new fob at the truck.

How I quote

Number first. Then work.

  • ✓Written quote by text before I dispatch. The number you see is the number you pay (pre-tax), travel included.
  • ✓Most makes on the road. Send your year, make, and model and I'll confirm yours before I come.
  • ✓I come to you. Driveway, lot, campsite, or roadside — across Winnipeg and southern Manitoba.
  • ✓Service-call fee. If the vehicle can’t be serviced at all for a reason that wasn’t shared up front, or the job is cancelled after I’m on the road, or no one’s there when I arrive — then a $45 + tax service-call fee covers the trip and diagnosis, never the full job price.
