Car keys in northern Manitoba — is a trip worth it?

I’m Leo. I run RAXO Locksmiths out of Winnipeg — I cut and program car keys at the vehicle, wherever it’s parked. I don’t serve the north today. Thompson is a good eight hours up Highway 6; that drive only makes sense if several vehicles are waiting in the same town.

So I’m finding out whether they are. Tell me your town and what you drive — no money, no commitment, no obligation to go through with it. If enough vehicles turn up in one place, I’ll set a date, post it here, and drive up to do them all in one run. If they don’t, I’ll say so plainly.

How this would work

Nobody pays for the drive alone.

The drive is the expensive part, and it costs the same whether I program one key or fifteen. One person can’t carry an eight-hour drive north — a dozen people easily can. So it works like this, in this order:

  1. 1

You tell me your town and your vehicle

Year, make, model, and what you need — a spare, a fob, or a full replacement because every key is gone. No payment, no form, no commitment. A text is fine.

  2. 2

I keep a count, town by town

Nothing happens while the numbers are small, and I won’t pester you. If your town stalls out, you’ll hear that from me rather than nothing at all.

  3. 3

Enough vehicles → I post a real date

Around five or six vehicles in one town, or a dozen across towns on the same route. Then and only then does the trip become real and dated.

  4. 4

Written quote, then a deposit to hold your spot

You see the full number — the work plus your share of the drive — before any money moves. If it doesn’t suit you, you say no and nothing is owed.

  5. 5

I drive up and do them all in one run

Keys cut and programmed at your vehicle, wherever it sits — a driveway, a shop lot, a yard. No tow, no waiting on a parts order.

Why it’s worth telling your neighbour

Travel gets split across everyone booked on the trip. Every extra vehicle in your town makes the drive cheaper for you, not just for me — and it’s what tips a “maybe someday” town into a dated one. This is the rare case where telling people about me is directly in your own interest.

The map, honestly

Six towns on one route.

These are the towns I’ve mapped, because they can be driven as a single loop rather than six separate trips out of Winnipeg. That’s the only reason the arithmetic works at all. Distances are one way, from Winnipeg.

Town One way Realistically
Dauphin 314 km Closest by a wide margin — the most likely first trip.
Swan River 501 km Natural second stop on the way north.
The Pas 626 km Needs the loop to make sense — not a standalone trip.
Snow Lake ~697 km Small, but there’s no dealer in town — punches above its size.
Thompson ~760 km Biggest population up there, and the hub for a lot of communities.
Flin Flon 764 km Two hours past The Pas — goes with it, not instead of it.

Somewhere else in the north — Gillam, Lynn Lake, Norway House, Cross Lake, Leaf Rapids, Grand Rapids? Not on the list, but not a no either. Tell me the town. If enough vehicles turn up somewhere I haven’t mapped, that changes the route.

What it would cost

Winnipeg prices for the work. The drive gets split.

The key work is priced exactly as it is in the city — the floors on my pricing page don’t move because the car is further north. What’s added is a share of the travel, and that share depends on how many vehicles are on the trip.

The work — same as the city

  • Lost all keys — transponder / remote-head$280+
  • Lost all keys — push-to-start smart key$350+
  • Spare / extra key — transponder$110+
  • Remote head / flip key$160+
  • Proximity smart key$220+
  • Key fob programming$110+
  • Car lockout (keys inside a car that can wait)$90

A second key made on the same visit is half price — so two keys run $420+ (transponder) or $500+ (smart). All prices plus tax. Full pricing →

The drive — shared, not charged twice

For Winnipeg-area work past the Perimeter I charge by the kilometre. That model doesn’t fit here — billing one person for a 1,500 km round trip would be absurd, and I’m not going to pretend otherwise.

Instead, a northern trip carries one travel cost that gets divided among everyone booked on it. Six vehicles in a town means each pays a sixth. Twelve means a twelfth.

I’m not quoting a per-vehicle figure until I know what a real trip looks like — putting a number here before I’ve got one booked would be a guess dressed up as a price. When a town reaches a workable count, everyone on that list gets the same written number before anyone pays a cent.

Be honest with yourself here

Who this actually suits — and who it doesn’t.

It suits you if the car can wait

  • • You’ve been meaning to get a spare key made since you bought the truck. This is exactly the job worth waiting for.
  • • There’s a vehicle sitting in the yard with no keys — a project, an auction buy, something inherited. It’s waited this long; it can wait a bit more.
  • • A fob has quit and the car still runs, so it’s an annoyance rather than an emergency.
  • • You run a lot, a shop or a fleet and have several vehicles with key problems. Batches are the strongest case there is — say so and I’ll take your town seriously.

It does not suit you if the car is dead right now

I’d rather lose the job than waste your day. There is no van of mine near you and there may not be for months. If you’re stranded today, your real options are the dealership for your make — most of these towns have at least one — or a tow to wherever the key can be made. Local lock shops up there lean toward houses and businesses; modern car keys and fobs are a different and far more complex discipline, so call ahead and ask before you drive over.

Sort today out locally. Then, if you want a spare so this never happens again, come back and add yourself to the list.

Northern Manitoba questions, answered straight.

Do you serve Thompson, The Pas or Flin Flon right now?

No. Today I cover Winnipeg and roughly 150 km around it, plus planned trips east to Kenora. The towns on this list are four to eight hours of driving each way, which only makes sense if several vehicles are booked in the same town on the same run. That is exactly what this page is for: I am collecting names to find out whether the demand is there. If it is, I will set a date and post it. If it is not, I will say so plainly rather than leave the page up pretending otherwise.

My car is dead right now and I have no keys. Can you help today?

Honestly, no — not today, and I would rather tell you that than waste your afternoon. There is no van of mine anywhere near you and there may not be for months. If your vehicle is stuck right now, your realistic options are the dealership for your make (most northern towns have at least one), a tow to wherever the key can be made, or a local shop that may be able to help with a mechanical key. Add yourself to the list anyway if you want — but solve today's problem locally first.

What does it cost to get on the list?

Nothing. There is no payment and no commitment at this stage. You tell me your town and what you drive; I keep a count per town. Money only enters the picture once a town has enough vehicles for a trip to make sense and I have posted an actual date — at that point I would ask for a deposit to hold your spot, and you would be free to walk away instead.

How many vehicles does a town need before you will drive up?

Roughly five or six in one town, or a handful of towns along the same route adding up to a dozen or so. The drive is the expensive part and it costs the same whether I program one key or fifteen, so the only way this works is by splitting it across everyone on the trip. That also means the number is not fixed — if two neighbouring towns each raise four vehicles, that is a better trip than one town with six.

What would the work actually cost if a trip happens?

The key work is priced exactly as it is in Winnipeg — the floors on my pricing page do not change because the car is further north. A spare transponder key starts at $110, a remote head or flip key at $160, a proximity smart key at $220, and fob programming at $110. All keys lost starts at $280 for most transponder and remote-head keys, or $350 for a push-to-start smart key; a second key made on the same visit is half price. On top of that there is a share of the travel, split between everyone booked on the trip — so the more vehicles on the run, the less each one pays toward the drive. Every number goes in writing before anyone pays anything. All prices plus tax.

Why would I use you instead of the dealership in town?

Sometimes you should use the dealer — if your car is stuck today and mine is a trip that has not been scheduled yet, the dealer is the faster answer and I will tell you so. Where I tend to be worth waiting for is on spare keys and on vehicles that are already sitting: I come to where the car is parked rather than the car being towed to me, I cut and program at the vehicle, and a second key made on the same visit is half price. If the timing works for you, it is usually cheaper and less hassle. If it does not, use the dealer.

I run a used car lot / repair shop / fleet. Can I book several vehicles at once?

Yes, and this is the single most useful message I can get. Trade-ins that arrive with one key or none, shop customers who lost theirs, work trucks that should have had a spare years ago — a batch of vehicles at one address is far easier to justify a drive for than the same number scattered across town. If you have three or more, say so when you message me and I will treat your town as a serious candidate.

Do you do house, cabin or padlock work while you are up there?

No — automotive keys only, everywhere I work. No house or cabin doors, no padlocks, no safes, no boat locks. It is the same boundary I keep in Winnipeg, and it does not loosen because the drive is longer. If the lock is not on a vehicle, I will point you to someone who does buildings rather than pretend it is my trade.

Which towns are you considering?

Thompson, The Pas, Flin Flon, Snow Lake, Swan River and Dauphin are the ones I have mapped, because they sit on a route that can be driven as one loop. Somewhere else in the north — Gillam, Lynn Lake, Norway House, Cross Lake, Leaf Rapids, Grand Rapids — is not a no. Tell me the town anyway. If enough vehicles turn up somewhere I have not listed, that changes the route.

Two lines is all it takes.

Your town, and what you drive. That’s the whole ask — no payment, no form, no commitment. If your town fills up, you’ll be the first to get a date.
