Car won't start? How to tell the battery from the key.

Half the people who call me about a car that won't start don't need a locksmith — they need a boost. Here's how to tell which one you are before you pay anybody, including me.

The 30-second version

Turn the key or press start, and listen. If the engine turns over — that rrr-rrr-rrr — your battery is doing its job, and the fault is elsewhere. If you get a single click, slow lazy cranking, dim dash lights, or nothing at all, it's the battery, and I'm the wrong phone call.

The one that fools people: a battery strong enough to light your dash but too weak to run the handshake between car and key — which shows up as “key not detected” on a car whose lights look perfectly normal.

Does it crank? That's the whole fork in the road.

Everything downstream depends on this one observation, so make it properly. Get the radio and the fan off, wind the window down if you can, and listen to what the car does in the first two seconds after you ask it to start.

Nothing — silence, dark dash

No lights, no click, dome light dead or brown. Battery This is a flat 12V battery, or a connection to it that's come loose or corroded. There is no version of this that a new key fixes.

One loud click, or slow lazy cranking

The dash lights dim hard when you try. Battery There's some charge left, just not enough to spin the engine. Same answer: power, not keys.

Cranks normally, never catches

The engine spins at full speed but won't fire and run. Not the battery Your battery just proved itself. Now it's fuel, spark, or the immobilizer refusing to release — and that last one is mine.

“Key not detected” / immobilizer light flashing

Dash comes alive, car won't acknowledge the key. Could be either This is the ambiguous one, and it's the next section.

The trap: a weak battery that looks exactly like a dead key.

This is the one I want you to take away, because it's the mistake that costs people the most money.

Your car reads the key over a very short-range radio handshake. That handshake needs steady voltage — and it is one of the first things to fail when the battery sags, well before your headlights or your dash give you any warning. So you get a car that lights up normally, and flatly refuses to admit there's a key in it.

Read that from the outside and it looks like a broken key. It isn't. It's a tired battery wearing a key problem as a costume. Get the vehicle battery load-tested before anyone replaces or reprograms a key — because a key that was never faulty won't be fixed by programming it again, and you'll have paid for the privilege of finding that out.

Winnipeg in February breaks both at once.

People apologise to me on the phone for having two problems at the same time, like it's suspicious. It isn't. It's one cold snap hitting two batteries.

The coin cell in your fob and the 12V battery under your hood both lose their punch in deep cold, and a marginal example of either will pick the same week to quit. Minus thirty-five does not sort them politely into separate months. That's why a Winnipeg winter produces so many calls that start out as a key problem and end as a battery — and a fair number that go the other way, where the boost gets the car running and the key still won't be recognised.

The other cold-weather pattern worth knowing: a car that starts fine every morning but won't start after sitting all day at work, in a parkade or an open lot, is usually telling you the battery is on its last winter rather than anything about your keys.

What to do in the next five minutes, in order.

  1. Try your other key. The single best free test you own. If the spare starts the car and the first key doesn't, the car is fine and that one key is the fault — my work. If the spare does exactly the same thing, the key is almost certainly innocent. Two minutes of walking back into the house settles a question that otherwise costs money to answer.
  2. Look at your dome light. Open the door before you try to start. Bright and white is a healthy battery. Dim, yellow, or fading as you crank is a battery telling you the answer out loud.
  3. On push-to-start, hold the fob against the start button. Most makes have a short-range reader there that finds the key even with a flat fob battery, and pressing start while holding it flat against the button gets a lot of people moving. Some vehicles use a slot or tray instead — the owner's manual shows where.
  4. Check that it's in Park. Genuinely. A shifter sitting a hair out of Park, or a clutch not fully down on a manual, will give you a completely dead no-crank on a perfectly healthy car. Rock the shifter firmly into Park and try again.
  5. Now decide which half you're in — the two sections below.

If it's the battery, here's who to call — and it isn't me.

I'd rather tell you that for free now than take a call-out fee to tell you in your driveway. A dead 12V battery is a boost or a new battery: a friend with cables, a roadside boost service, your roadside coverage if you carry it, or a shop that will test and replace it.

One thing worth knowing before you get boosted: a boost only proves the engine will start when there's enough current behind it. It says nothing about whether that battery holds a charge, or whether the alternator is putting one back in. If the car dies again after a short drive, or the next morning, the battery or the charging system is the real problem — and that's a mechanic's job, not a locksmith's. Don't let a successful boost convince you the car is fixed.

Check your paperwork too, before you pay anyone. A fair number of Manitoba drivers carry roadside coverage through their insurance, a credit card, or a vehicle warranty and have forgotten it's there.

If it's the key side, that part is mine.

Battery tested good, spare behaves the same, car still won't recognise a key — now it's my half of the problem. That's an immobilizer or key fault, and it gets solved at your vehicle, wherever it's sitting.

My car won't start — is it the battery or the key?

Try to start it and listen. If the engine turns over — that rrr-rrr-rrr sound — your battery is doing its job and the problem is somewhere else, sometimes the key or immobilizer side. It is the best free test you have. If the spare starts the car and the first key does not, the car is fine and the fault is in that one key — that is my work. If the spare behaves exactly the same way, the key is almost certainly innocent and you are looking at the vehicle. Does a boost mean my battery is fixed?

No. A boost proves the engine will start with enough current behind it. It says nothing about whether the battery holds a charge, or whether the charging system is putting one back in. It is minus 35 and both my fob and my car are dead. Is that a coincidence?
