Honda Civic key fob not working? Battery, or the fob itself.

If your Honda Civic key fob has stopped working, it's almost always one of two things: a weak coin-cell battery — a roughly $5 fix you can do yourself — or a fob that has actually failed and needs a replacement programmed to your car, which I do from $90+ plus tax, right at your vehicle.

Here's how to tell which one you've got before you spend a dollar — and a pattern I keep seeing on Civics around the Winnipeg area.

TL;DR · which is it?

A $5 battery, or the fob.

Each price is pre-tax. "+" means "starts at" — the exact number comes by text before I dispatch.

Most common

It's the battery

Fresh coin-cell (do it yourself)~$5

A part cost from any hardware store, not a service fee. I'll tell you if this is all it is — before you book anything.

If a fresh battery doesn't fix it

It's the fob

The fob itself has failed. I match one to your Civic and program it at your car — the exact price depends on year and fob type.

First, rule out the battery.

Most "dead" Civic fobs aren't dead — the coin-cell battery inside has just gotten weak. Before you assume the worst, try two quick things:

  • Warm it up. Hold the fob in your hand or pocket for a few minutes and try again — a cold, weak battery often comes back once it warms.
  • Hold it to the start button. On a push-button Civic, press the fob right against the start button. That lets the car read the fob even with a flat battery, so you can drive to get a new coin-cell.

If the car reacts to either of those, it's the battery — a fresh coin-cell is about a $5 part from any hardware store, and the swap is a two-minute job. My key fob battery page walks through it. I'll tell you it's a battery before I'd ever charge you for a fob.

When it's the fob itself.

If a fresh battery doesn't bring it back, the fob has likely failed. In that case I program a replacement to your Civic on the spot — I have dealer-level access for most makes, so I match the new fob, program it to your car, and test it before I leave. No dealer visit, no tow.

Programming a replacement Civic fob starts at $90+ plus tax, and the exact number depends on your Civic's year and fob type — an older remote-head key, a flip key, or a push-to-start Smart Key each sit at a different point on the ladder. You get that number in writing by text first. More on how I handle Honda keys and fobs on my Honda & Acura page.

"The honest first answer on a dead Civic fob is usually 'try a $5 battery' — I'd rather tell you that than sell you a fob you don't need."

Something I've noticed: the Beausejour Civics.

Here's a real pattern from doing this across the region. I get more dead-Civic-fob calls out of Beausejour and the eastern communities than almost anywhere — and unlike a lot of fob trouble that only flares up in the deep cold, these keep coming in right through the summer.

I won't pretend to have a lab explanation for why that pocket of the map sends me so many. But the pattern is real enough that if you're a Civic owner out that way, it's worth keeping a working spare fob on hand before your main one quits at the worst moment. Beausejour, Lac du Bonnet, or anywhere east — I come to you.

If a dead fob has you locked out.

Sometimes a dead Civic fob means you can't get into the car at all. If you're locked out, that's a flat $75 car lockout plus tax — I open the door with no damage, then I sort the fob out from there.

Common questions about Honda Civic fobs.

Why did my Honda Civic key fob stop working?

Most of the time it's a weak coin-cell battery inside the fob, not a broken fob — warming it in your hand and holding it against the start button often gets you going. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, the fob itself has likely failed and needs a replacement programmed to your Civic. Text me your Civic's year and a photo of the fob and I'll tell you which it is.

How much to replace a Honda Civic key fob in Winnipeg?

If it's just the battery, that's about a $5 do-it-yourself part. If the fob itself has failed, I program a replacement at your car starting at $90+ plus tax, depending on your Civic's year and fob type. I send a written quote by text before I drive out, and you pay after it works.

Can I still start my Honda Civic if the fob battery is dead?

Usually yes. On most Civics with push-button start, holding the fob right up against the start button lets the car read it even with a flat battery. On a Civic with a mechanical key, the key still turns the door and ignition. If neither works after a fresh battery, the fob likely needs reprogramming — text me and I'll confirm.

Do you come to me for a Honda Civic fob in the Winnipeg area?

Yes — I'm mobile and come to your car across Winnipeg and out to about 150 km, including Beausejour and the eastern communities where I get a lot of Civic fob calls. Text me your year and where you are, and I'll bring the right fob and program it on-site.

How I quote

Cheapest honest answer first.

  • Battery before fob. If a $5 coin-cell fixes it, that's what I'll tell you — no upsell.
  • Written quote by text before I dispatch. The number you see is the number you pay (pre-tax).
  • I come to you. Across Winnipeg and out to about 150 km, including Beausejour and the east.
  • Pay after it works. You check the new fob locks and starts the car, then you pay me.
