How much does a car key cost in Winnipeg?
Leo · RAXO Locksmiths
Published May 31, 2026 · Pre-tax. Manitoba RST + GST = 12%.
Short answer for the people scrolling fast: a Winnipeg car key, done mobile, starts at $90 (lockout or BYO fob program) and tops out around $280+ for a brand-new key when you've lost every copy. Dealer route on the same job is typically $350 – $1,100 plus a tow if your car won't start.
Long answer: the price depends on five things — service type, key technology, vehicle year, complexity of the immobilizer, and whether you supply the part or I do. Here's the full picture so you walk into the quote already knowing what's fair.
TL;DR · open-ended floors
The four services, four floors.
Each price is pre-tax, mobile, on-site at your vehicle in Winnipeg. "+" means "starts at" — exact number comes by text before I dispatch.
Service 1
Spare / extra key
When you have a working key and want a backup. Cut and programmed at your vehicle.
Service 2
Lost all keys (AKL)
Every working copy is gone. Requires ownership verification — government photo ID matched to registration or proof of insurance in your name.
Service 3
Fob programming
Your existing fob needs pairing — battery swap included if needed. BYO friendly with Amazon / Walmart fobs at the floor price.
Service 4
Car lockout
Non-destructive entry. No drilling, no broken windows. Government photo ID required at the door.

Why is the difference between $90 and $280?
Same locksmith, same tools, same truck (well — same sedan, in my case). The price gap comes from what the job actually involves. Here are the five levers that move every quote.
Service type
Lockout is a 15-30 minute mechanical entry — no parts. AKL is a 60-90 minute job with ownership verification, key cutting from scratch, and immobilizer programming. The price spread tracks the work spread.
Key technology
A transponder key (metal blade with a chip in the head) is ~$90+. A Smart Key (proximity fob with push-to-start) is ~$180+. The Smart Key has more hardware, more programming steps, and stricter security.
Vehicle year + immobilizer generation
A 2008 Camry uses an older transponder system that programs in 5 minutes. A 2022 Tundra uses a newer-generation immobilizer that requires more sophisticated dealer-level access. Same brand, very different procedures. Year and generation matter more than make.
Who supplies the fob
BYO fob (from Amazon, Walmart, an online OEM supplier) at $90+ is the cheapest path for fob programming. If I supply the fob, the part cost is included in the $90+ floor. Both are honest options — depends on whether you want to do the parts hunt yourself.
Brand-specific complexity
Some vehicles need extra access steps. 2018+ Jeep Wrangler JL and Gladiator use a Security Gateway module that adds time to every key job. Some 2022+ Toyota/Tundra/Tacoma models need higher-tier programming. Newer BMW/MINI is case-by-case. None of this is "surprise on arrival" — I tell you up front before sending the quote. See the brand pages (Toyota, Honda, Ford, Jeep, Chevy) for the model-by-model breakdown.

Watch out for these hidden costs.
Whoever you pick, here are the line items that sneak onto invoices in this trade. If the quote you receive doesn't address them, ask.
- ⚠"Trip charge" or "service call fee." Some shops charge $40-$80 just to show up — separate from the work. I don't. The floor is the work, mobile, period.
- ⚠"Programming fee" added on top of the key. Watch for shops that quote a low key price ($50) then add a $150 programming fee at the end. My floors include programming.
- ⚠Tow. Dealer AKL almost always involves a tow ($100-$250) because the work happens at the bay. I come to where the vehicle is — no tow.
- ⚠"Aftermarket part not warrantied." True in many cases. If you bring a fob you bought online and it's defective, the labour for the programming attempt still applies — that's industry-standard. I'll flag suspicious-looking fobs before I start so you can decide.
- ⚠Tax handling. Manitoba RST (PST) 7% + GST 5% = 12% applies to automotive locksmith services in Manitoba. My floor prices are pre-tax — I add 12% on the final invoice. Some shops bury the tax in a "rounded" quote so you can't compare cleanly.
What you're actually paying for.
People sometimes ask why a "car key" is hundreds of dollars when their house key is $4. Here's the honest breakdown of what's inside that floor price.
- The physical key or fob. An OEM-quality blank, transponder chip, or full Smart Key fob — $20-$120 in parts cost, depending on the vehicle.
- Cutting labour and equipment. Mechanical edge-cut for older keys, laser-cut (sidewinder) for high-security keys on most 2010+ vehicles. The cutting machines aren't cheap, and the cuts have to be accurate to spec.
- Programming labour and dealer-level access. The credential, hardware, and software that let me speak to your vehicle's immobilizer as the manufacturer expects. Renewed regularly. The single biggest investment in this trade.
- Travel time. Mobile means I drive to you — same time and fuel as any service call. Built into the floor, not surcharged.
- Insurance, business registration, and accountability. Commercial liability insurance, Manitoba corporation, NASTF VSP authorization, written quotes, warranty on the work. The infrastructure that makes you not the next scam-locksmith story.
When the dealer is still the right call.
I'd rather lose a job to a dealer than mishandle it. Three honest cases where the dealer wins:
- →Vehicle is under factory warranty and the dealer absorbs the key cost as part of a warranty repair. Free is free.
- →Rare or first-year model where the immobilizer architecture is too new for aftermarket access. Mostly a non-issue — but for some 2024-2026 vehicles the dealer is the only path. I'll tell you up front if that's your situation.
How I quote
Number first. Then work.
- ✓Written quote by text before I dispatch. The number you see is the number you pay (pre-tax).
- ✓Open-ended floors. "$90+" means "starts at $90." If your year/make/model is a base case, that's the number. If it's complex, the increment is disclosed in the quote — not on arrival.
- ✓No trip charge, no programming fee, no surprise. The floor is the work — labour, programming, parts (or BYO discount), cut.
- ✓Pay after it works. Key cuts, fob programs, car drives away. Then we settle up — e-transfer, tap, or cash. Not before.
