Ford's MyKey has caught out a lot of used-car buyers around Winnipeg. It's a genuinely useful feature — until it's the only key you've got. Here's what MyKey is, the honest free fix if you already have an admin key, when you actually need me, and what it costs.

What a Ford MyKey actually does.

MyKey is a factory feature on most Fords from about 2011 on. A regular, unrestricted key — Ford calls it the admin key — can turn any other key into a MyKey with limits baked in. Parents use it for teen drivers; it's meant to ride alongside the admin key, not replace it. When a MyKey is the key in the ignition, the vehicle will typically:

  • Cap the top speed — often around 130 km/h, and you can't override it.
  • Cap the stereo volume and keep chiming until the seatbelt's on (the audio mutes until it is).
  • Block turning off traction / stability control and give earlier low-fuel warnings.
  • Refuse to make more keys or change any MyKey setting — that takes an admin key.

That last one is the trap. If the admin key is missing, a MyKey can start and drive the car, but it can't unlock the settings or authorize a second key. You're stuck on one restricted key.

The honest part: if you have an admin key, you don't need me.

I'd rather tell you the free fix than sell you a job you don't need. If you still have an unrestricted admin key, you can clear MyKey yourself in a couple of minutes: put the admin key in, and in the vehicle's information display go to Settings → MyKey → Clear MyKey (exact menu wording varies by year and by SYNC version). That wipes the restrictions. No locksmith, no charge.

You only need me when there's no admin key at all — the used Ford that came with one restricted key, or the day the admin key is lost and only a MyKey is left. That's the job below.

Two situations bring most Winnipeg Ford owners to this page:

You can only clear MyKey with an admin key. If you have one, do it yourself from the dashboard menu — Settings, then MyKey, then Clear MyKey — in a couple of minutes, no charge.
