This is a job I actually do — here's the newest one.
Early August 2026: a 2025 Honda CR-V Sport AWD — current generation, push-button start — with every key gone. That's the kind of call a lot of shops turn away because of the complexity involved on a vehicle that new. I drove to the car, verified ownership (government photo ID matched to the registration), decoded the vehicle, and cut and programmed a brand-new smart key right there. The owner started the CR-V and drove it away the same day — no dealer order, no tow, no parts wait.
That was the fifth CR-V on my call sheet since May. The other four: a 2011, a 2017 that was 38 km outside the city, a 2022 that needed a spare Smart Key, and another 2025. The generation doesn't change the promise — the job gets done at the car, and all jobs are same day.
Which key does your CR-V use? The year ladder.
CR-V keys moved through four eras, and the era — more than anything else — sets which price tier your quote lands in:
- →2005–2006 and earlier — a metal transponder key with a separate clip-on remote. The affordable $90+ tier (the remote is its own small item).
- →Roughly 2007–2014 — the one-piece remote-head key, blade and buttons in a single unit. No Honda stayed on this style longer than the CR-V. That's the $160+ tier today.
- →Mid-2010s onward — the proximity Smart Key arrives on higher trims around 2015 and becomes standard on Canadian-market CR-Vs around 2017. Spares run $220+. One catch: US-market base models kept the metal key longer, so a US import can take a different key than its same-year Canadian twin.
- →Current generation (2023 on, hybrid included) — push-button Smart Key on every trim. Still done at the car, including all-keys-lost.

If the CR-V still starts but the buttons or proximity stopped responding, don't book anyone yet — the most common cause is a flat coin-cell battery, a $5–10 fix. My CR-V fob stopped working — do I need a whole new key?

Do you unlock CR-Vs too — keys locked inside?
Yes — a CR-V lockout is $90 flat plus tax, opened without damage. If the keys are gone rather than locked in, that's the all-keys-lost job instead; text me which one you're looking at and I'll quote it in writing either way.
