If you've lost your only car key away from home in Manitoba and have no spare, you don't need a tow to the dealer. I come to your vehicle, make a brand-new key from scratch, and program it on the spot. All-keys-lost starts at $280+ plus tax, and I text you a written quote before I drive out.
Losing every working key is stressful enough at home. On a road trip, at the lake, or in a town two hours from Winnipeg, it can feel like your whole day — or weekend — is wrecked. It usually isn't. Here's how the job actually works, what it costs, and how to tell whether you're really in an all-keys-lost situation before you spend anything.
TL;DR · which situation is it?
Two very different prices.
Each price is pre-tax, mobile, on-site at your vehicle. "+" means "starts at" — the exact number comes by text before I dispatch.
No working key left
Lost all keys (AKL)
Every copy is gone, so a new key has to be built and matched to your car. Needs ownership verification (photo ID matched to registration or insurance).
You still have a way in or a spare
Locked out, or a spare exists
If a working key still exists — or the keys are just locked in the car — you're in a much cheaper job than all-keys-lost.
Full numbers on the pricing page. If your only key is truly gone, here's the lost car keys service page.
First, is it really all-keys-lost?
All-keys-lost is the most expensive key job, so it's worth thirty seconds to be sure that's what you have. Ask yourself three things before you assume the worst:
- →Is there another working key anywhere? A partner's copy at home, a valet key in the glovebox, a spare a relative could bring. If one working key exists, this is a spare-key job from $90+ plus tax — not $280+.
- →Are the keys actually locked inside the car? Then it's a lockout — a flat $75 plus tax, and your keys are fine once I get the door open.
- →Is every working key genuinely gone? That's the real all-keys-lost case — and the one I build a new key for from scratch.
Not sure which one you're in? Text me what happened and I'll tell you straight — no charge to figure it out.
Why it isn't a dealer tow.
When every key is gone, the car has no key to copy — so a new one has to be built and matched to your vehicle. A dealership will usually have you tow the car in and wait days for a part. I do the whole thing at your vehicle:
I come to the car
Driveway, parking lot, campsite, or the shoulder of a highway — wherever you're parked. No tow truck, no waiting for a flatbed.
I make the key from scratch
I have dealer-level access for most makes on the road, so I read what the car needs, cut the new key, and program it to your vehicle on-site.
You test it before you pay
You watch the new key unlock and start the car, then you pay me — on the spot, never up front. The quote I texted is the price.
Most makes, same day
Most all-keys-lost jobs are done in one visit. Text me your year, make, and model and I'll confirm yours before I head out.
If it happens on the road or at the lake.
Summer is when I get these calls out of town: someone at the beach in the Interlake, a family passing through on a road trip, a visitor who drove in from out of province and realized their only key is gone. I'm a mobile locksmith, so I come to you across Winnipeg and out to roughly 150 km — to the lakes, towns, and villages people actually drive to:
- →The Interlake: Selkirk, Gimli, Stonewall, Lockport, and up toward the lake — there's a dedicated Selkirk & Interlake page.
- →East to the lakes: Beausejour and out toward Lake of the Woods / Kenora.
- →All of Winnipeg and the surrounding municipalities.
How travel works, plainly: inside the Perimeter, travel is typically included. Past it, a mileage travel charge applies — sized by distance and quoted in the text before I head out. One number that includes the drive, no meter, no surprise on arrival. Full map on the service area page — text me exactly where you're parked and I'll confirm.
How to never pay $280+ for this again.
Here's the honest math: a spare key is $90+ plus tax made on your schedule, versus $280+ plus tax the day your only key vanishes at the worst possible time and place. If you're reading this before it happens to you — or you just bought a used car that came with a single key — the cheapest thing you'll ever do for your vehicle is get a spare cut now. I wrote a fuller piece on getting a spare before a summer trip, and the whole price ladder is in what a car key costs in Winnipeg.
Common questions about all-keys-lost.
Can a locksmith make a car key with no original?
Yes. When every working key is gone, I make a brand-new key from scratch and program it to your vehicle on-site — no dealer visit and no tow. In Manitoba this all-keys-lost job starts at $280+ plus tax, and I verify you own the vehicle first (government photo ID matched to your registration or insurance).
How much is all-keys-lost in Manitoba?
All-keys-lost starts at $280+ plus tax. The exact number depends on your vehicle and key type, so I send a written quote by text before I drive out — you always see the price first. If you are outside Winnipeg, a mileage charge for the distance beyond the Perimeter is included in that quote, not sprung on you on arrival.
Do you come to me if I'm stranded out of town?
Yes, within reason. I cover Winnipeg and out to about 150 km — the Interlake (Selkirk, Gimli, Stonewall), Lockport and Beausejour, and east toward Lake of the Woods and Kenora. Travel past the Perimeter is a mileage charge quoted in writing before I leave. Text me your make, model, and exactly where you are parked.
What if I only lost one of two keys?
Then it is not all-keys-lost — it is a spare-key job, which is much cheaper. With one working key still in hand I can cut and program a replacement starting at $90+ plus tax for a transponder key. Make the spare before you lose the second one, so you never end up in the $280+ all-keys-lost situation.
